Preschool Programming within the Kodiak Island Borough School District
In alignment with federal and state mandates, school districts are required to provide special education services for preschool children identified with disabilities.
Within this framework, the Kodiak Island Borough School District (KIBSD) has one of the most successful preschool initiatives for young learners with disabilities in the State of Alaska. Our program is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
At KIBSD, our approach is multi-faceted, integrating classroom options that bring together typically developing preschoolers, often referred to as peer models, with children who have been identified with a disability. This integration not only enriches the learning experience for children with disabilities but also promotes empathy, understanding, and friendships among all students. Peer models play a crucial role in this dynamic, serving as role models and helping to normalize learning differences in a safe, welcoming environment.
The KIBSD preschool program is structured to meet the diverse needs of our students. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are developed for children with disabilities, outlining specific goals, accommodations, and services tailored to each child's unique strenghts and needs. Our dedicated team of educators, therapists, and support staff works collaboratively to implement these plans, ensuring that every child receives the necessary support to thrive.
In addition to individualized instruction, the KIBSD preschool program emphasizes play-based learning, which is critical for developmental growth in early childhood. Through carefully designed activities and play experiences, children are encouraged to explore, engage, and learn at their own pace. This method not only supports cognitive development but also enhances social skills, emotional regulation, and motor skills.
Family involvement is a cornerstone of our program. We recognize that parents and guardians play an essential role in their child's development and education. Hence, we strive to create strong partnerships with families, providing them with resources, training, and ongoing communication to foster a collaborative support system. We host workshops, parent-teacher meetings, and community events to ensure families feel connected and engaged in the schooling process.
Our commitment to inclusivity extends beyond the classroom walls. The KIBSD preschool program actively seeks to foster awareness and advocacy for children with disabilities within the broader community. By providing training and support to educators, encouraging community involvement, and promoting positive narratives about disability, we aim to create an environment where every child can thrive and be celebrated for their unique contributions.
As we look toward the future, our focus remains steadfast on continuous improvement and innovation. We regularly assess our program's effectiveness through feedback from families and staff, ensuring we evolve to meet the needs of our students and community. Our goal is to not only provide exceptional educational opportunities but also to cultivate an inclusive mindset that values diversity in all its forms.
The KIBSD preschool program stands as a testament to our commitment to providing quality education to our community. With a focus on integration, individualized support, and family engagement, we strive to create a nurturing and empowering environment that fosters the growth, development, and success of all students, setting the stage for lifelong learning and achievement.
Steps for Applying to the KIBSD Preschool Peer Model Program
The Kodiak Island Borough School District accepts peer models to serve as role models based on criteria listed on our website on a space available basis. Selection is selective as there are limited peer model seats each year. Not all families who apply to the Peer Model Program will be placed.
1. Application Process
To apply as a peer model, please complete the Peer Model Application. Note that not all applicants will be accepted as peer models. Selection is based on specific criteria and available seats.
Important: Only fully completed applications will be reviewed. After submission, check your email for a confirmation summary of your application. Applications are reviewed in the order they are received and not all families will be contacted for an in-person screening.
2. In-Person Screening
If contacted for an in-person screening, your child will be required to attend one (1) peer screening session. During this session, our team will observe your child in a preschool classroom setting to ensure they meet our peer model criteria. A mandatory informational meeting will be held while your child participates in the peer screening. This meeting will provide important information to prepare him/her for preschool. Due to limited space, we request that only one parent attend the meeting, and no siblings are brought along. This will help ensure that the meeting space remains comfortable and accessible for all attendees.
Notification
You will receive an email within two weeks of your child’s screening date updating you on their status.
